Men who have sex with men (MSM) or women who have sex with women (WSW) can identify as gay/lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual.
There is great diversity on sexual practice and our sexual identity may not always reflect sexual behaviour - just because a man or woman identifies as heterosexual he or she may still have sexual contact with men or women respectively.
It is not uncommon for a person to feel attracted to someone of the same gender but not identify as a lesbian or bisexual.
Coming to the realisation that you are attracted to people of the same gender can be easy for some and difficult for others, but understanding your sexuality can make you more comfortable with it.
‘Coming out’ is when a person realises that they are attracted to people of the same gender and perhaps deciding to tell others.
Telling a trusted friend or relative may be helpful for support, but others may prefer to keep it to themselves; remember it is your sexuality, it is your decision who and when you tell.
Exploring, identifying and expressing your sexuality can be stressful and can impact on your mental wellbeing.
