Gambling

Casino chips on a roulette tableFrom time to time we might have a go at gambling, it might be a bet on a race, a poker night with friends, buying a lottery ticket or a scratch card, or playing bingo at the local hall.

Gambling can be a problem if it becomes a habit, is used to solve problems or to escape from reality.

Signs of problem gambling can include:

  • gambling increasing amounts of money or gambling more than you can afford;
  • getting into debt or losing your possessions;
  • neglecting other areas of your life, such as work, family or friends;
  • inappropriate behaviour, such as stealing to gamble or pay debts.

It is important to talk about the problem with friends or family, but you may need to contact a counsellor or engage in groups such as Gamblers Anonymous.
